A very interesting question is why the virus – and other respiratory viruses – tend to be seasonal in the first place. To be accurate it’s the illness that’s seasonal – the infection may not be. This seems to be related to temperature-sensitivity – eg the virus replicates better in complex tissue-culture models at 34C than 37C. Some of this is explored here:
